Pier Nine Restaurant in Hastings - Our award-winning restaurant in Hastings is now open 7 days / week!
The Zanzibar Hotel (home to Pier Nine) has just been voted in The Sunday Times Travel's list of 'Top 63 Hotels in The World'. This is largely due to the addition 3 years ago of the in-house restaurant 'Pier Nine'.
What the restaurant does very well is draw on more than just its stunning seafront location and glorious sea views. It taps very determinedly into the abundant resources of The English Channel (right in front of the hotel) for fresh fish, and makes full use of The Garden of England behind the hotel, really drawing on the best that Kent and Sussex have to offer.
The Restaurant combines classic Victorian elegance with contemporary driftwood / beach feel. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed; Heavy, white-washed drift-wood tables, a gorgeous white baby-grand piano, interesting objet's d'art and a beautiful garden are all set against white walls adorned with big decorative mirrors and menu boards showing the morning’s catch of fresh fish.
As well as the food, The sea view from the restaurant is one of the biggest draws here. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide vast unbroken vistas of the English Channel and beyond. On a good day the coast line of France is a very faint line on the horizon.
The chefs are rich and diverse in their culinary knowledge. The head chef has grown up in Mark Hix restaurants and in Michelin starred restaurants in all four corners of London. His passion for food is evident in the visual presentation and flavour of everything that leaves the kitchen. From mature Sussex Dexter fillet steak to freshly caught cod or sea bass and delicious vegetarian options, each dish is produced with love, and delivered by friendly waitresses who are more than happy to recommend a particular wine!

If you're heading out we have 3 little gems that you would only know about if you lived here. The decor might not be fancy, and in the TajMahal you won't understand the waiter(!), but for great food at a great price, these places are unbeatable.
1). TajMahal South Indian Cuisine 01424 431501 www.tajmahalfoods.co.uk
The best food we've tasted outside of India. Indian family run. Watch them add the spices and cook the food as they go. This place is about 3 minutes walk from the hotel so we go here all the time and are yet to spend more than a tenner.
2). The Dragon Bar 01424 423688
Cool, relaxed atmosphere and good, seasonal food guaranteed. Old Skool DJs spinning eclectic music. Situated in the old part of town approx 20 minutes walk from the hotel. Not possible to book - Have a drink at the bar while you wait for a table. Also, eat early at the weekend as it gets too busy to eat in comfort after about 7:30pm. Approx £20 / head with a shared bottle of wine.
3). Boulevard Books Thai Restaurant 01424 436521
This is a really unique dining experience! A second hand book shop by day; an authentic Thai restaurant by night. Nestled in the quaint old part of town, (approx 20 minutes walk from the hotel) this husband and wife team serve a small but varied menu using the freshest ingredients to create the best Thai food we've had outside of Thailand. Take your own booze. £15 / head. Genius!
