Zanzibar Boutique Hotel honeymoon suite in luxury hotel. Boutique hotel for wedding night, first night in Sussex

'Hotels in Hastings'

Good hotels in Hastings are few and far between.  There are a fair few luxury B&B’s and there is some decent four and five star guest house accommodation. However, actual hotels are limited to the likes of The Royal Victoria (Best Western), Banatynes (Spa Hotel), The Powdermills hotel in Battle, and The Zanzibar Hotel in Hastings and Rye. If you want to stay in Hastings and have access to the beach and the old town, particularly to the restaurants and other tourist attractions, there are only two or three hotels that allow you to be within walking distance of the majority of local tourist attractions and amenities that the town has to offer. The Royal Victoria is grand on the outside and, in it’s heyday, Victoria (the Queen) would frequent the town and stay there. However, the grand old days of Victoriana feel like a distant memory when you look at the Tripadvisor reviews and read the press that the hotel has attracted in recent times. The establishment is suffering from severe lack of investment and needs some serious TLC. The kitchen recently received a zero star rating from the local authority and the local feeling is that the writing’s on the wall for the place unless it gets sold or taken-over by a National brand like the excellent Boutique hotel chain ‘Hotel Du Vin’ or the small but growing ‘Alexander House Hotel’ in Turners Hill, Crawley. Either of these players would be a serious coup for the town and just what the hotel needs to turn itself around.   Next along the coast is the newly renovated ‘Grand Hotel Hastings’. This once featured on Channel 5’s ‘Hotel Inspector’ and was so bad, people used to go there because it was an experience in its own right. The hotel has been shut for the last 2 years. Under new ownership and undergoing an enormous renovation, the hotel is due to re open soon and we seriously hope the new team running it have some hospitality industry experience and the ethos and commitment to succeed. On the edges of Warrior Square, right on the sea front of Hastings and St Leonards, we have The Zanzibar Hotel. Hot-on-the-heels of being voted in ‘The Top 63 Hotels In The World’ by The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, this Hastings hotel is setting new standards for boutique hotels in Sussex and nationally. Tripadvisor.com have recently awarded the hotel a ‘Travelers Choice award’ in both the ‘Romantic Hotels’ and ‘Small Luxury’ categories (meaning they are in the top 25 hotels for these things in the whole of the UK). Pier Nine restaurant at Zanzibar has just won the Arrow FM ‘best place to eat in Hastings’ award, as voted for by the people of Hastings themselves. The food is all sourced locally and the chefs are talented and creative. Pier Nine easily trumps the ‘Restaurants in Hastings Old Town’ for food quality and ambience and the service is warm and friendly by an experienced team. The garden is well established and catches the sun during the day. It’s ideal for those looking for a ‘restaurant with a garden’ and is a great option for anyone wanting to celebrate a special occasion. Wedding anniversaries are a speciality of this leading ‘Boutique Hotel and Restaurant in Hastings’ and the hotel champagne package makes any occasion particularly special. Opposite the New Hastings Pier we have The White Rock hotel. The Pier burnt down in 2011 and has slowly but surely been rising from the ashes ever since. In 2014 it won lottery funding from English Heritage and is now being rebuilt with a great sense of purpose, carrying with it a much greater sense of optimism for the town and the wiser area. The opening of the Pier has been delayed until the Autumn but when it does it is most likely to benefit both the White Rock and Zanzibar Hotels which have direct views of it.

The sea views from White Rock are similar to those at Zanzibar Hotel.  The hotel is well run and well established and it is a good option if your budget is more limited and / or Zanzibar is full. It’s close enough to Zanzibar to be able to eat in their restaurant ‘Pier Nine’, and close enough to the White Rock Theatre to consider Pier nine’s pre-theatre menu and a stay at the hotel.
